Starfleet Academy Library
With the final exam around the corner, most cadets were increasingly anxious and tried to make the best of the remaining time before the exam ,which is wearing short .the Starfleet academy library houses large amount of ancient books of a variety of cultures .
Though cadets these days rarely study with printed books(except during some history class ),they still need a quiet space to study together. Therefore ,the habit of studying in a library remained in the academy.
This night , with just 11 days to the final exam, most cadets came over to prepare for the test. They knew that the result would decide their destiny in Starfleet,at least partially. Xan was one of them, except that he found himself unable to focus on his study. After another 15 minutes of staring at his PADD, he decided to take a walk outside.
Walking in the garden, he could smell a variety of flowers. He didn’t come to the garden often. He could spot a few couples in the garden ,chatting happily. They didn’t seem troubled.
“Boothby is truly a genius in gardening,”walking in the garden, he thought. He recalled that in earlier Federation Standard, people like Boothby were described as a person with a green thumb.
After 15 minutes, Xan had to admit that taking a walk was of no use .He wanted to clear his mind so that he could get down to reviewing ,but he couldn’t help thinking about something else.
Xan spotted an officer walking towards him.He wanted to evade the officer but the officer already noticed him.“Taking a walk in the garden to unwind, cadet?”
“Yes, sir.”
As the officer walked closer , Xan recognized that he was Elara Miren Bennet, the first officer of U.S.S. Expedition, a sovereign-class ship.“Commander Bennet”He saluted.“You’re cadet…”
“Cadet Xan, sir.”
“Oh, Xan, I remember you.I took a brief look at your records yesterday.”Bennet patted his shoulder,“I was looking through the profiles of cadets in your grade.Though your grade was constantly fluctuating, I believe in your ability. As long as you perform normally, you’ll be assigned to a great starship.I think you have the capability to be one of my crew.”
“Thank you, sir.”Xan answered briefly. He had indeed fantasized about being assigned to a Sovereign-class starship, but he had always known it was impossible. Such fantasy was nothing but detrimental to him. Then both of them remained silent.
Bennet broke the silence first,“I understand that the final exam is only 11 days away, this must bring a lot of stress to you.”
“Yes,sir.”
“That’s quite common among graduates. You know, there was a period when I could not concentrate on my study before the final exam, too.Every night, I just sit there and imaged my life after the exam.

  • If I failed, should I stay in the Academy for another year?If not, where could I go?
  • If I performed well, where could I go during the vacation, what would I meet on the nice starship?

So, I just sit there and did nothing.”
“Fortunately, I realized that these imaginations were meaningless and that I was supposed to live the present, focus on the present.”
“I understand that, sir.But sometimes I just couldn’t shake these thoughts off.”
Bennet turned to him, looking more serious,“Cadet, resolving this is no easy task. There isn’t a universal solution.Plus, it’s alright to let your mind float freely for a moment. But, listen this,Xan,”Bennet stopped and held his shoulder,“If you keep being obsessed with imaginations of your future, it will become tasteless. And, at the same time, you’re losing it.”
After another 5 minutes’ walk in the garden, Bennet accompanied him back to the library.Upon leaving, Bennet said,“Recently I’ve been studying some Chinese books, and I believe a motto I came across perfectly fits the situation. That is, where there is a will, there is a way.Xan, I believe in you.”
